For mat-based Pilates you need – you guessed it – a mat! There are lots of different kinds available, so choosing the right mat can be difficult. Here are a few key things to keep in mind when buying your mat.
Thickness
In Pilates, we spend a lot of time lying on the mat in various positions – on our back, our tummy, our side or resting on our knees, elbows and wrists. As such, a thick, spongy mat can make your classes so much more comfortable. A classic yoga mat is typically only 4 mm thick. For Pilates, I would recommend a mat that’s at least 8 mm thick.
Length
Mats come in various lengths. Cheaper mats or those available in the “middle aisle” in some supermarkets are often quite short. For comfort and safety, you need a mat that’s longer than you are. In Ireland, we’re used to expressing our height in feet and inches. Most mats have the length expressed in centimetres. Before you buy, make sure you know your height in centimetres. I would add at least 2-3 cm for added comfort.
Grip
Your mat needs to hold you safely in position as you do the exercises. As such, it is important that the mat feels “grippy” on both the underside and the top side. You don’t want the mat to slide around on the floor too easily. You also don’t want your feet, knees or hands to slide apart as you exercise. Make sure you feel a mat before you buy it, or look for reviews on how slippy/grippy it is.
Colourful design, bags, straps, etc.
It’s nice to have an attractive mat, but it is far more important to have a functional mat. Make sure you don’t sacrifice thickness, length or grip for a fancy design. Also, while a bag or carry strap can be handy, they really aren’t essential unless you’re walking long distances with your mat. If you’re only walking from the car to the studio, then you can just tuck your rolled-up mat under your arm!
My recommendations
My current mat
I currently use an Adidas mat. It is 183 cm (6 feet) long and a generous 1 cm thick. While it wouldn’t quite be grippy enough for some yoga poses, it is perfect for Pilates. I have been using it in all my classes for over a year and it still looks as good as new. I have seen this in fancy colours and would buy a second one if I found a nice design, but I am perfectly happy with my plain, comfortable mat. I would highly recommend these!

Similar alternative
Another similar option is this multipurpose mat from Fitness-Mad. I don’t have this mat, but I have other items from the same brand and would recommend them. They are used in many fitness studios.

Budget option
For a more budget-friendly option, try the KG Physio mat. Available in a range of colours and thicknesses, this 6-foot mat will work well for most people doing a weekly class, although likely to show some small signs of wear and tear over time.

Non-slip Pilates & yoga mat
If having a truly non-slip mat is important to you or you want a mat that will work well for both Pilates and yoga, try this extra-thick yoga mat by Yogati. These are thicker, lighter and less expensive than the luxury “Liforme” brand while still providing excellent grip and yoga alignment lines. I might invest in one of these myself!

See you on the mat! Keep moving!
