Music has always played a big part in my life, from singing songs in the car on long journeys to busking on Grafton Street and on to playing in various pubs and clubs around Dublin. I remember the first album I ever owned (a vinyl album of Walt Disney classics), buying my first single (Frankie, by Sister Sledge) and my first CD (The Lion & The Cobra, by Sinéad O’Connor). I was lucky to have parents, aunts, uncles and cousins who loved music as much as I did – every family gathering ended with a sing-song.
Music has a way of transporting you completely, back to an era or even a specific instance in your past. It can touch your soul, move you, fire you up, calm you down. You hear a track on the radio that you haven’t heard in years, and suddenly you remember an old friend or lover. Then there are songs you can’t listen to because they remind you, often vividly, of painful moments in your life.
Around this time last year, I did a 30-Day Song Challenge on Facebook and was delighted by the number of people that joined in to share their favourite songs. It was a wonderful month of music. I’ve decided to try it again, but this time I want to include instrumental music as wells as songs. I’m a big fan of lyrics, so the bulk of my music collection is songs, but there are plenty of instrumental tunes that I love, from Irish traditional reels and jigs to classical pieces. I’ve used the word “tune” to incorporate both!
So, if you’re a music fan, please come and join me over on Facebook for the next 30 days! I don’t want to post here every day, but I hope to do a weekly round-up of some of the best tunes shared. Here’s to some great music!
